Goji Juice And The ORAC Value

In regards to the ORAC value of the different brands of Goji juice. There is a lot of crazy misleading information out there on the Internet. In fact it is so bad that even if any of the information was true how would you ever know unless you did your own test.

First I should just summarize what an ORAC test is. ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity. It is a lab test that measures how many oxygen radicals a specific food can absorb. The more oxygen radicals a food can absorb, the higher its score. Ok then why is the nutrition industry falling all over themselves to prove their product has a higher value than anybody else? Because it's easy to mislead the results and if they can convince you they have the highest amount per whatever of value then you would buy their product.

Is ORAC all that important?

For buying Goji juice it is not important at all because there are no standards in place for measuring ORAC value. Marketers are over inflating the value of their supplements and juices by using measurement tricks. The most common I seen was one brand using per liter measurement against the competitions 100gram value. Not to mention spiking the samples.

Other factors like different growing and harvesting conditions, including the season and temperature, influence the score of a particular sample by as much as fourfold: ORAC score can be influenced by how the sample was dealt with, for instance cooking, freezing, and storage.

ORAC Values that are Important

Although we can't trust the results of most of the health maintenance products out there. There is a good benchmark for assessing antioxidant strength in the whole foods we buy.

Example of a high ORAC is 9,000 provided by 1 US cup of cultivated blueberries normally found in your supermarket during summer. Dark, colorful foods tend to have a higher value. A cup of canned corn, by contrast, at the low end of the ORAC scale, gives just 400 units.

Guidelines for antioxidant intake have not yet been established by agencies such as the US FDA or Health Canada, but preliminary science indicates a daily value of 5000 ORAC units would provide a baseline of protection.

Another Value to consider

Based on ORAC alone I'm not sure paying the high price for Goji juice is worth it when one half cup of blueberries can give your whole days value in antioxidants or 12 cups of canned corn.....

Antioxidants and Goji

Antioxidants Are They Even In Goji Juice OK has anybody tested Goji juice for antioxidants or are we still just seeing the results from the berries not the juice?

Antioxidant Drinks Verses Apple So called antioxidant drinks are all over the marketplace. And up to now Goji juice sellers have not made antioxidants a primary focus of their marketing efforts
